Ingredients

Sweet potato and apple base
  • 4 sweet potatoes Peeled and sliced 1/4 inch thick.
  • 3 apples Peeled, cored, and sliced.
Honey glaze
  • 0.3333333333 cup honey
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter Melted.
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp ginger
  • 0.25 tsp salt
Topping
  • 0.5 cup pecans Roughly chopped.
  • 1 fresh thyme Optional garnish.

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Prep and assemble
  1. Preheat the oven to 375F, then grease a 9x13 baking dish for easy release.
  2. Layer the sweet potato slices and apple slices in the dish using alternating overlapping rows.
  3. Whisk honey, melted butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and salt together until smooth and fully combined.
  4. Pour the glaze evenly over the layered sweet potatoes and apples so the surface looks glossy.
Bake and finish
  1. Cover tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes, until the slices start to soften.
  2. Uncover, scatter the pecans over the top, and bake 15 more minutes at 375F until tender and caramelized with browned edges.
  3. Garnish with fresh thyme if desired, then let the casserole stand briefly so the glaze clings to the slices.

Notes

For the cleanest layering and even baking, slice the sweet potatoes to a consistent 1/4 inch thickness and keep the rows tightly packed. Refrigerate covered up to 4 days; reheat at 325F until warmed through. Freezing is not recommended because the apples can soften after thawing. For a dairy-free option, use plant-based butter in the glaze while keeping the honey and spices the same.
