Ingredients

Apple filling
  • 6 large apples Peeled and sliced.
  • 0.25 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
Oat topping
  • 1.5 cup rolled oats
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 0.75 cup brown sugar Packed.
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter Melted.
  • 1 vanilla ice cream For serving.

Equipment

  • 1 Dutch oven

Method

Make the apple filling
  1. Toss sliced large apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice, then transfer to the slow cooker.
  2. Spread the apples into an even layer so they cook tender across the whole crock.
Make the oat topping
  1. In a bowl, combine rolled oats, all-purpose flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Drizzle in melted unsalted butter and stir until the mixture forms clumps.
Assemble and slow cook
  1. Scatter the clumpy oat topping over the apples in the slow cooker and do not stir.
  2. Place a double layer of paper towels under the lid to absorb excess moisture.
  3. Cook on Low for 2.5-3 hours, until the apples are tender and the topping is set, with the crock lid kept closed.
Optional crisp finish and serve
  1. For a crispier topping, transfer to an oven-safe dish and broil for 3-4 minutes, until lightly browned.
  2. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Notes

For the best set topping, keep the lid closed during the 2.5–3 hour Low cook so steam doesn’t loosen the crumble. Refrigerate leftovers in a covered container for up to 3 days; reheat in the microwave or a 350°F oven until warmed through. Freezing works for the filling, but the topping may soften after thawing. For a lighter dessert, swap half the butter in the topping for an equal amount of neutral oil and expect a slightly less crisp crumble.
