Ingredients

Dry mix base
  • 3 cup Chex cereal
  • 2 cup pretzel sticks
  • 2 cup popcorn, popped
  • 1 cup mixed nuts
Seasoned butter coating
  • 0.25 cup butter, melted
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
Sweet add-in
  • 1 cup M&Ms or chocolate chips

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Combine the mix
  1. Add Chex cereal, pretzel sticks, popcorn, and mixed nuts to a large disposable aluminum pan and stir to distribute evenly.
  2. In a small bowl, mix melted butter with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder until smooth.
Toast with the butter coating
  1. Drizzle the butter mixture over the cereal mixture and toss thoroughly to coat all pieces.
  2. Place the pan on the grill grate over medium campfire heat (about 350°F/175°C) and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring every 3-4 minutes until the mix turns golden.
  3. Remove from the heat when toasted and fragrant, with browned edges on the cereal and pretzels.
Cool and add chocolate
  1. Cool the snack mix for 10 minutes until it is no longer hot to the touch.
  2. Stir in M&Ms or chocolate chips after cooling so they don’t melt.
Store for camping snacking
  1. Transfer to airtight bags or containers and store for easy grab-and-go camping snacking.

Notes

Pro tip: Stir every 3-4 minutes so the Chex cereal toasts evenly and doesn’t burn at the edges. Store airtight at room temperature up to 1 week; for best crunch, keep away from humidity. Freezing: not recommended for optimal texture. Dietary swap: use vegan butter and a Worcestershire sauce labeled vegan if you want a dairy-free version.
