Prep
- Preheat the oven to 350F and grease a 9x13 baking pan with a thin, even coating.
- Whisk all-purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together until the spices are evenly distributed.
Make the batter
- Whisk melted butter and both sugars until glossy and smooth, then whisk in eggs and vanilla extract until fully combined.
- Fold in the flour mixture until just combined, then fold in the diced apples and walnuts or pecans if using.
Bake and finish
- Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan, smoothing the top into a level layer.
- Bake at 350F for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with just a few moist crumbs and the surface looks set.
- Cool the brownies in the pan before adding caramel drizzle.
- Drizzle the caramel sauce over the cooled brownies, then cut into squares and serve.
Notes
For clean squares, let the brownies cool in the pan until firm, then chill 1-2 hours before cutting if your kitchen is warm. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 4 days; freeze up to 2 months (freeze before or after drizzling). To make them dairy-free, swap the butter for a plant-based melted butter substitute that measures cup-for-cup.
