Ingredients

Dry ingredients
  • 1.5 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 0.25 tsp nutmeg
  • 0.25 tsp salt
Wet ingredients
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 0.5 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
Fruit and add-ins
  • 2 cups apples, peeled and finely diced
  • 0.5 cup walnuts or pecans, chopped (optional)
Caramel drizzle
  • 0.25 cup caramel sauce

Equipment

  • 1 sheet pan

Method

Prep
  1. Preheat the oven to 350F and grease a 9x13 baking pan with a thin, even coating.
  2. Whisk all-purpose flour, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt together until the spices are evenly distributed.
Make the batter
  1. Whisk melted butter and both sugars until glossy and smooth, then whisk in eggs and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  2. Fold in the flour mixture until just combined, then fold in the diced apples and walnuts or pecans if using.
Bake and finish
  1. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan, smoothing the top into a level layer.
  2. Bake at 350F for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick comes out with just a few moist crumbs and the surface looks set.
  3. Cool the brownies in the pan before adding caramel drizzle.
  4. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the cooled brownies, then cut into squares and serve.

Notes

For clean squares, let the brownies cool in the pan until firm, then chill 1-2 hours before cutting if your kitchen is warm. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator up to 4 days; freeze up to 2 months (freeze before or after drizzling). To make them dairy-free, swap the butter for a plant-based melted butter substitute that measures cup-for-cup.
